Calabasas STEAM is a California Department of Education authorized Specialized Secondary Program (SSP) that provides students with an innovative and unique approach to advanced learning opportunities in a variety of subjects. STEAM students will focus on preparation for post-secondary and career opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). The acquisition of technology skills and their use as a tool for instruction and learning is also emphasized in this program. Our teachers received training in innovative approaches to curriculum and instruction, integrating the Performing Arts into all disciplines.
The CHS STEAM program is focused on the connections between science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the Performing Arts, utilizing our state-of-the-art Performing Arts Educational Center, a production venue unrivaled in Los Angeles County. The program will provide opportunities to utilize the following technologies: ETC Ion Lighting Console, ETC Element Lighting Console, Yamaha LS9 Sound Digital Mixing Console, Yamaha M7 Digital Mixing Console, Cardioid and Dynamic Microphones, Counterweight Rigging System, Rigging Equipment: turnbuckles, A.C. Cable, Shackles, Verlocks, MIG Welder, Plasma Cutter, AutoCAD, 3D Printing, Vectorworks, and Microprocessor with C Programming Language.
The marriage of arts with the sciences has been touted as a way to introduce the creative process, which is iterative and embraces failure, into disciplines that often emphasize a linear, controlled approach to problem solving. Our goal is to graduate students who have participated creatively and innovatively in the arts, but also in high levels of science and mathematics courses. In addition to the STEAM required courses, STEAM students will have the opportunity to take CHS unique courses including but not limited to Environmental Biology, AP Chemistry Lab, H Physiology, Graphic Design, Web Design, Gaming, Broadcasting, and 3D Animation.
STEAM will be incorporated into all of the students’ classes.
9th Grade courses: English I, STEAM Physics or STEAM Robotics 1, STEAM Production, Algebra or Geometry, Health/World Geography, and PE. This is not a single class, club or extracurricular activity. The students will travel together in a cohort, incorporating STEAM thinking in all the courses taken.
New Electives TBD: Robotics 2, and CAD/3D Design
