General Network Use

The network is provided for students to enhance learning, conduct research, complete assignments, and communicate with others. District-owned resources may only be used for academic, school-related purposes. Access to social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook is prohibited. Access to network services is given to students who agree to:

1. Act in a considerate and responsible manner.
2. Not harm or misuse computers or computer networks.
3. Give credit to authors of the information used in my class projects.
4. Report any problem, misuse of equipment, and/or inappropriate materials to a teacher or administrator as soon as possible.
5. When publishing work online, recognize that you are a representative of our school district and be cognizant of how other people will view you and our district when reviewing your online work.

Access is a privilege - not a right. As such, general school rules for behavior and communications apply and users must comply with district standards and honor the agreements they have signed. By signing this form, each student understands that if they do not follow these guidelines they will lose their computer privileges.

Network administrators will review files and communications to maintain system integrity and insure that users are using the system responsibly. Users should realize that files saved on school file servers and the history of internet sites visited by students are not private and may be viewed by teachers and administrators.

Internet / World Wide Web / E-mail Access

Access to the Internet and e-mail will enable students to use thousands of libraries and databases. While our intent is to make Internet access available to further educational goals and objectives, students may find ways to access other materials as well. Filtering software is in use, but no filtering system is capable of blocking 100% of the inappropriate material available on the Internet.

The “2-second Rule” is in effect when online - if the student accidentally or inadvertently clicks on a page and something inappropriate comes up (despite our filter), the student has 2 seconds to click off the site.  No exceptions! The student should inform a teacher or administrator of the inappropriate site.

Publishing to the World Wide Web

Parents, your daughter or son’s work may be considered for publication on the World Wide Web, specifically on his/her school’s web site. Such publishing requires parent/guardian permission. It is the policy of the Las Virgenes School District never to publish a students’ last name. We believe this policy is one more step in keeping our students safe.

Unidentified photos of students may be published on school websites, illustrating student projects and achievements. If you do not want your child’s photo to be published on the website, please check the appropriate Parent/Guardian Permission Section on the back.

The activities listed below are examples of conduct that is NOT permitted:

1. Using district-owned electronic communication facilities or student owned electronic
communication facilities while on District property to send defamatory, fraudulent,
harassing, obscene, threatening or other messages or images that violate applicable
federal, state or other law or District policy.
