11th Grade Counseling PDF Print E-mail

In the fall of your senior year, you will be applying to college.  In many cases, a college will instruct you to have your guidance counselor fill out a portion of the application and write a letter of recommendation on your behalf.  The following are some important factors to consider during this process.

1.    Get organized!  Make sure that you have such things as extracurricular awards and community service hours documented and in a secure and accessible location.  KEEP A COPY OF EVERYTHING.

2.    Choose wisely!  Make sure the colleges that you apply to meet YOUR needs...not the needs of others!

3.    How many is too many?  Don't be fooled by the thought that more is better.  Pick a few "safety" schools, a few "reach" schools and several "appropriate" schools.

4.    Order test results to be mailed directly to colleges. (SAT, ACT, AP)  YOU are responsible for having test scores sent to the collges.

5.    Don't forget to order official transcripts from classes taken outside of CHS.

6.    Follow the application directions EXACTLY as they are written.  If a college does not ask for teacher recommendations, for example.   DO NOT SEND THEM!

Specific instructions from your counselor

1.    Pick up your resume packet from the Counseling Office.  (Listen for the announcements for the date they will be available).

2.    Fill out the resume packet  AS THOROUGHLY AS POSSIBLE so that your counselor can write about you as accurately and as glowingly as possible.  Make sure to complete the checklist on the front page of the resume form.

3.    When you give your counselor all fo the needed items, present them IN PERSON.  DO NOT JUST DROP THEM OFF IN THE COUNSELING OFFICE!

4.    Present all needed items to your counselor in an ORDERLY manner.

5.    Order transcripts from the registrar to be given to your counselor at the time you bring all needed items to your counselor.

****Please note that the UC/CSU's do not ask for anything from

your counselors.****

Specific things your counselor will need:

1.    An addressed (college address) envelope for each college to which you are applying.  Your counselor will put the return address on each envelope.  DO NOT PUT YOUR ADDRESS AS THE RETURN ADDRESS.

2.    Place TWO stamps on each envelope as we will be placing many documents in each envelope.

3.    It is VERY helpful if you use self adhesive envelopes.

4.    Do not forget to sign a "Consent to Release Information" form and return it to your counselor.  They are available in the Counseling Office.  Without this form, your counselor is unable to speak to the colleges admission officers on your behalf.

5.     Try not to stress out! --- This will get done!  Your counselors and everyone at CHS are here to assist you through this process.
